The Yolk

Where all the good stuff is.

Type Spotlight: Sacramento

There are so many aspects of design, but the one that has captivated, perplexed, excited, and eluded designers since the very beginning is Typography.

You can do a good ad without good typography, but you can’t do a great ad without good typography.
— Herb Lubalin

Typography is defined as the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed. It has the capability to make or break a design. It can set the tone for how written word is received. And, it conveys so much with each nuanced letterform that novices and professionals alike, literally spend hours scrolling through a seemingly endless list of typefaces

It’s one of those devious elements of design in that when it’s good, you won’t notice it… but when it’s bad, that’s all people will talk about!

My preference in type design has always leaned towards minimalism. It is easy to get carried away with some of the more elaborate fonts available. Flourishes can be so seductive! But, at the end of the day, there’s nothing that compares to the beautiful, clean lines of a simple, elegant font.

There are so many excellent resources for finding new fonts but my current favorite—especially when working on client projects—is Google Fonts*. Not only do they offer a vast array of styles, weights, and characters, but they’re all open source (aka: FREE) for anyone to use!

The following type specimens and designs feature our Type Spotlight of the month Sacramento.

*DISCLAIMER: Hatch, The Yolk, or any of our collective entities, are in no way sponsored, endorsed, or administrated by, or associated with, Google Fonts. We actually just really like them and want other designers to know where to source free typefaces that you can use for commercial and personal use. So, without further ado.. enjoy some great type designs!

Sacramento has the elegance of a script with the modern flair of a monoline font.

This makes it easy to pair with a formal serif typeface, such as Judson, just as much as it does with the more streamline Josefin Sans (both are also found in the Google Font library). It can be high-end or playful. Organic or youthful. The following designs show the versatility of Sacramento in two distinct ways.
