Color Story: Passion
We’re about to turn up the heat ‘cause June’s color is hot, hot, HOT. Say hello to this month’s color story: Passion.
And by HOT, we mean HOT! Passion is the reddest of reds. It pops and sizzles like a neon flame. So vibrant that it can only truly be viewed on a screen or monitor. And with a name like Passion, you know it’s going to be intense.
Red by its very nature is an intense color. Add the luminosity of a lit screen, crank up the saturation, and you’ve got this hue that just doesn’t quit. Red is symbolic for love, danger, action, energy, and — you guessed it — passion.
When used on its own, this color demands attention. It practically leaps off the page. It can be used with equally saturated hues to create a loud and active composition, paired with black for a ominous or even sexy effect, and tamed with neutrals or other muted tones.
But don’t let the intensity of the digital version fool you… this radical red can add a pop of life to any decor for a fresh, and unexpected, look.
Time for an art lesson
Red is a primary color, meaning you can’t create it by mixing other colors. To achieve this particular variation in painting, you’ll be using a bright red right out of the tube. Working on a screen? Crank that color wheel up! Add a little yellow for a true poppy red, a little black to cut down the luminosity, or leave it untampered with and wild.

This color may be intense, but so is the flower this palette is named after. Drawing inspiration from the exotic Poppy plant, we’ve paired Passion with a calm neutral, deep green, and a rich black. Perfect for fabric design or home decor when you need a little pop!

RED ALERT
This color demands attention so why not let it! By combining Passion with a few understated tones, this color can really shine. We love it with a muted goldenrod, and some warm grays but any neutrals will create the same effect.

HOT TROPICS
When we said we were turning up the heat, we meant it! This palette is certainly not for the shy designer as it is bright on bright on bright. Passion finds its place besides three cooler tones of equal saturation for a cheerful, tropical vibe.
